Unlocked Cell Phones

What does it mean to have an unlocked cell phone? Well the SIM card located in your phone usually near the battery has your own personal serial number on it. This number is called every time you make and receive calls and your phone company tracks your minutes and usage through this number to calculate your bill. SIM stands for subscriber information module.

So you can take your sim card out of your phone and put it in your friends phone make a call and your provider will know it’s you. The important difference about this is that you can put your SIM into any compatible phone (and pretty much all modern GSM phones are compatible with all modern SIMs) and that phone will now act as your phone, because the wireless company sees your SIM inside it. It doesn’t care that you’ve changed phones, all it cares is where to find your SIM.

An unlocked cell phone is a phone that accepts any SIM card. These phones are usually offered by carriers with GSM capabilities. GSM stands for Global System for Mobile communications. This means you could use your phone globally where countries offer this type of system. So if you have a carrier that offers the GSM and an unlocked phone you could easily switch to a carrier with GSM and just get the SIM card without having to buy a whole new phone. You just get the service and plug your new SIM card into your old phone. The other option is to buy a new phone but keep your existing carrier and plug your old SIM card into your new phone.

The actual scenario would go like this: You travel to a foreign country where your current provider doesn’t offer service. So you buy a new service in that country but you keep the phone you have and just plug in the new SIM card. The other scenario is if you drop your phone in water or it breaks and you need to buy a new phone. After you buy the new unlocked phone you plug in your old SIM card and your phone will work.

The other situation is that some companies lock their phones so that they are only loyal to their SIM cards. For example AT&T have exclusive rights to sell the iphone so they don’t want their iphones in the hands of their competitors at verizon or t-mobile so they lock the iphones so that they only work with SIM cards issued by AT&T.
